Goodrich Castle is an impressive Norman castle in the village of Goodrich, Herefordshire. It was built by the powerful Marcher lord, Richard de Clare, in the late 11th century and is widely considered one of Britain’s best-preserved castles. It is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area and a great place to visit for a day out this spring.
Goodrich Castle is a great place to explore. Its beautiful, well-preserved medieval interior includes a grand hall, chapel and a range of other rooms. A large, fortified wall surrounds the castle, giving visitors an idea of what life was like in medieval times. The castle is also home to the famous ‘Roaring Meg’, an old cannon used to defend the castle during the Civil War.
The Legend
Legend says a local blacksmith worked in a forge close to the castle in June 1646 to make the ‘Roaring Meg’. The cannon launched ‘grenades’, which were hollow iron balls filled with gunpowder. The sound was so loud that ‘Roaring Meg’ became its name.
The castle is open to visitors daily from 10 am to 5 pm. The quietest times to visit are before 11 am and after 2 pm. During spring, the castle grounds are full of colourful flowers and plants, and there are plenty of activities available for all the family to enjoy. Visitors can explore the castle’s grounds and discover its history through guided tours or participate in various educational activities and workshops.
Plenty to see and do
As well as exploring the castle, visitors can also take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The castle is in a unique landscape with beautiful views of the Wye Valley and the Black Mountains. On a clear day, you may even be able to spot the distant Brecon Beacons.
There are also falconry displays, archery and woodcarving. Activities throughout the year include a medieval jousting tournament and a May Day parade.
